MDCC baseball sweeps No. 4 Pearl River at midway point

The Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team swept No. 4 Pearl River Community College in a doubleheader at Jimmy Bellipanni Baseball Complex in Moorhead on Saturday.

MDCC won game one, 5-4, before picking up a 7-6 victory in the second game to complete the first half of Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) conference play.

In game one on Saturday, the Trojans were aided by a stellar relief performance from Kellen Spann (Meridian) to aid in the victory. The sophomore right-hander threw 4.2 innings and did not allow a run, while picking up four strikeouts and allowing only four hits to pick up the win on the hill.

Cade Blanchard (Prairieville, La.) and Jatavis Melton (Natchez) each had two hits in the opener and Blayke Dendy (Yazoo City) hit a solo home run to pace the MDCC offense.

In the second game, the MDCC offense had six hits scattered throughout the lineup and the Trojans pitching held on for the one-run victory.

Chance Guthrie (Southaven) started on the mound and went 4.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits. Jeremy Smith (Wesson) bridged the gap in the middle innings with 2.1 innings of two-run ball, while Carson Forrester (Columbus) got the final out for the save.

MDCC (13-15 overall, 5-9 in the MACJC) is set to travel to Meridian Community College on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader and will return home for a 1 p.m. double dip versus Jones College on Saturday in Moorhead.
