Baseball splits long DH at Northwest
MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team traveled to Senatobia on Tuesday afternoon, and after an exhausting conference doubleheader, came away with a split versus Northwest Mississippi Community College.
The Rangers of Northwest hit a walk-off home run in game one to defeat MDCC, 12-9, but the Trojans responded with a 5-3 victory in 10 innings in the second game.
The Trojans have now won four of their last six games heading into Saturday's home doubleheader with Southwest Mississippi Community College.
GAME 1
Delta jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game one before Northwest used the late innings to come back and walk the Trojans off after a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Gage Little (Duck Hill), as he has done all season, led the way for the Trojans offense in game one, as he picked up two hits and three RBI.
Riggs Easterling (Shreveport, La.) and Davon Mims (Vicksburg) each had two hits and a run scored, and Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) hammered out two hits and picked up an RBI.
Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) was given the no-decision despite going 6.1 innings and finishing with four strikeouts, while leaving the game with the lead. Blayne Clark (Water Valley) was credited with the loss on the hill for MDCC.
GAME 2
Delta was able to secure the doubleheader split after a 5-3 victory in the nightcap, one in which Haden Luke (Vicksburg) delivered a pitching performance for the ages. The freshman right-hander threw nine innings and recorded 14 strikeouts, while allowing only three runs to cross. He received credit for the victory, and Chase Logan (Holcomb) earned the save with his inning of work in the bottom of the 10th inning. The second-year righty struck out four hitters, as one Ranger hitter reached on a passed ball after the third strike, and held Northwest scoreless in the frame.
Julian Murphy (Ridgeland) led the MDCC offense with three hits, one RBI and a run scored in game two, while Easterling added a two-run double to tie the game at two runs apiece in the top of the seventh inning. Easterling would add another RBI to his total after a bases loaded walk in extra innings.
