Trojans fall in season opener

The Mississippi Delta Community College football team dropped its season opener to No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, 49-9, on Thursday night.

Gulf Coast scored first in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead, one in which they would never relinquish.

The Trojans were able to get on the board with 10:17 left in the second quarter when Spencer Romero (Brookhaven), a sophomore kicker, nailed a 31-yard field goal to get the Trojans on the board.

However, Gulf Coast would tack on 21 unanswered points to take a 28-3 lead at halftime.

MDCC scored their lone touchdown of the evening late in the third quarter when freshman wide receiver Treveon Miles (Woodville) rushed in from 14 yards out for the score. Romero's point after was good to make it 28-9 in favor of Gulf Coast. MGCCC added 21 consecutive points to close out the scoring for the evening.

The Trojans return to action on Thursday evening, playing host to South division foe Hinds Community College for a 7 p.m. matchup at Jim Randall Stadium in Moorhead.
