Delta picks up second consecutive victory

The Mississippi Delta Community College football team won for the second consecutive week on Saturday, defeating Northeast Community College, 20-13, on Homecoming at Jim Randall Stadium in Moorhead.

The victory moved the Trojans to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the North division, while the loss dropped the Tigers to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the North.

MDCC played a stellar version of defense all day, especially in the secondary, as the Trojans picked off four Northeast passes. Su'Metris Stewart (Hollandale) had two interceptions on the afternoon, including an interception return of 70 plus yards for the touchdown to extend the MDCC lead to 20-13 with less than a minute remaining to seal the deal. George Jackson (Rolling Fork) and Kelton Marshall (Wiggins) each added interceptions of their own to aid in the defensive output.

Delta got on the board first when quarterback Byron Walker (Sulphur, La.) found Terrell Coleman (Crosby) in the end zone on a 12-yard pass & after the Spencer Romero (Brookhaven) point after attempt was good, MDCC led 7-0 with 13:24 left in the second quarter.

The Trojans would take a 14-0 advantage into the locker room when Walker hit Patrick Jackson (Columbus) on a 23-yard pass for the score & the Romero PAT was good with 5:33 left before halftime.

Northeast would cut into the MDCC lead with a rushing and passing touchdown in the second half, but were never able to tie the game up after a missed extra point, giving the Trojans a little bit of breathing room with the one-point lead. Stewart iced the ballgame with the aforementioned interception return for the touchdown and final score of 20-13.

The MDCC defense was in the Northeast backfield for most of the contest, especially in the first half. The Tigers finished with 333 yards on 69 plays, but only 51 of these came on the ground, as the Trojans defense had nunerous tackles for loss.

George Jackson led the MDCC defense with seven tackles in the unofficial defensive stats department, and was helped out by Latarius Embry (Maben), who had six tackles and two tackles for loss, while Isaiah Karriem (Columbus) had five tackles and one sack.

MDCC finished with 71 plays for 316 yards, including 162 through the air and 154 on the ground. Walker was 14-31 for 162 yards, two touchdowns and one interceptions. Lebarron Jones (Mobile, Ala.) had five catches for 75 yards and Treveon Miles (Woodville) had five grabs for 41 yards. Patrick Jackson was a force on the ground, finishing with 21 attempts for 139 yards and one touchdown reception.

Delta hits the road on Thursday to take on North division foe Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
