Football standouts garner postseason honors

The Mississippi Delta Community College football program had a number of team members honored with postseason awards on Tuesday.

MDCC had one student-athlete named to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State first team and six players selected to the All-State second team.

Lebarron Jones (Mobile, Ala.) was the lone Trojan selected to the All-State first team, and Jones, Lane McGregor (Pontotoc) and Austin Pickett (Gulfport) were the three All-State second team recipients on offense, while Kyle Cass (Mobile, Ala.), LaDarrius Glover (West Point) and Isaiah Karriem (Columbus) were the three All-State second team members on the defensive side.

Jones, a sophomore wide receiver, was named to the All-State first team as a kick returner after finishing the 2019 campaign with 1,582 all-purpose yards, which was good enough for first in the MACJC by a very large margin. He ended the season with 594 yards on 23 kickoff returns (first in the MACJC) and had 92 yards on seven punt returns.

Jones was selected to the All-State second team as a wide receiver as well after hauling in 60 catches for 896 yards and seven touchdowns, which were both good enough for second in the MACJC.

McGregor, a sophomore punter, had 55 punts for 2,204 yards, equating to a 40.1 yards per punt average. This mark put him at fifth in the MACJC in yards per punt average.

Pickett, a freshman offensive lineman, was largely responsible for grading the way for a Trojans offense that averaged 318.2 yards (212.6 passing, 105.6 rushing) per game.

Cass, a sophomore defensive back, ended his second season by finishing third on the team in total tackles with 42 (32 solo, 10 assists), as well as collecting three tackles for loss and leading the team in pass breakups with six.

Glover, a sophomore defensive lineman, had a monster season on the MDCC front line, as he led the team in sacks (six), tackles for loss (7.5) and forced fumbles (four), while finishing with 28 tackles and two pass breakups.

Karriem, a sophomore linebacker, was second on the team in tackles with 49, and also had 3.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one sack and one fumble recovery.
