Trojans softball fights through early season weather

The Mississippi Delta Community College softball team was scheduled to host Southwest (Tenn.) Community College on Tuesday in Moorhead, but due to heavy rains throughout the state, the games were canceled and moved to Tuesday, March 5 at 1 p.m.

MDCC has had to deal with weather and a bit of growing pains throughout the early going, as the Trojans and a freshman-heavy roster is looking to get off the schneid and pick up a win if Mother Nature will cooperate.

The team's offense has been solid to this point, as the Trojans are currently hitting .297 and are led by Kassie Comeaux (Jennings, La.). The freshman catcher/infielder is hitting .474 with one double, one triple, one home run and three RBI.

Baley McCurdy (Morton), a sophomore infielder, and Jessica Irion (Greenville), a sophomore outfielder, trail Comeaux with a .400 batting average and .368 average, respectively.

Kristen Deason (DeRidder, La.) has been the workhorse in the circle thus far, as the freshman right-hander has thrown 17.1 innings and has picked up 13 strikeouts in the early going.

MDCC is scheduled to play host to Blue Mountain College (JV) on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m., weather permitting, in the team's next contest.
