Softball battling through early weather

Softball battling through early weather

The Mississippi Delta Community College softball team has battled through nasty Delta weather and numerous cancellations to this point in the early going of the 2020 campaign.

MDCC will hit the road on Saturday, heading to Wesson to take on Co-Lin Community College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The Lady Trojans (1-3) opened the season on Valentine's Day and came away with a two-game split at the hands of Baton Rouge Community College, losing a 14-1 affair in the season opener before coming back with a 9-8 victory in game two. Lexie James (Olive Branch) and Beth Spiers (Carriere) each had a hit in the opener.

Tabitha Thompson (Rox) led the way at the plate in the nightcap, picking up three hits and scoring a run to lead the charge. Trinity Boatrite (Morton), Tyra Hudson (Leland), Madisen Rainey (Water Valley) and Layne Tedder (Pontotoc) each had two hits as well to lead the 13-hit attack. Alex Johnson (Raleigh) earned the win in the circle, as she threw three scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and no walks, while picking up a strikeout.

Delta traveled to Blue Mountain College (JV) on Monday looking to continue the positive momentum, but were unable to come away with a win. MDCC lost game one, 5-3, before falling in the finale, 10-4.

The tough-luck loser in the circle in the first game for the Lady Trojans was Gracie Parsons (Southaven), who threw six innings and allowed only one earned run to cross, while finishing with three strikeouts. Boatrite, Anna Carlisle (Polkville), Hannah Higdon (Water Valley) and Sara Lawrence (Clarksdale) each picked up a hit in game one.

In the second game at Blue Mountain, the offense was led by James, who was the lone hitter with multiple hits on the contest. She also scored a run.
