Higdon & Lawrence ink with Delta State

The Mississippi Delta Community College softball program recently had two second-year players cast their lot at the four-year level, as Hannah Higdon (Water Valley) and Sara Lawrence (Clarksdale) have inked with Delta State University to continue their academic and athletic careers.

Higdon, a right-handed hitting infielder, was on an early season tear in 2020 until the campaign was ended prematurely due to Covid-19. She was hitting .405 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI to go along with nine runs scored. She also had a .622 slugging percentage, .465 on-base percentage, was three-for-three on stolen bases and had a .957 fielding percentage behind a team-leading 31 assists.

The 2019 season was a very impressive one for Higdon, a Water Valley High School graduate, as well. She finished with a .299 batting average with 21 runs scored, six doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI and two stolen bases. Higdon also had a .402 slugging percentage and .344 on-base percentage.

Lawrence, like Higdon a right-handed infielder, scored five runs, had four walks and was three-for-three in the shortened season behind a .130 batting average and one RBI in 2020. She was second on the team with 23 assists, finishing behind Higdon in this area.

The graduate of Lee Academy filled up the stat line as a rookie in 2019, scoring 13 runs, picking up five doubles and one home run, 16 RBI and a .188 batting average. Lawrence flashed a steady glove as well, finishing with 84 putouts and 49 assists.

Higdon and Lawrence will each have three years remaining at DSU after the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) offices granted the 2020 season of eligibility back to the student-athletes.
