Former Trojan Great Tre Hobbs Hired as Lady Trojans Softball Coach

Monday, August 14, 2023 – Moorhead, MS

Mississippi Delta Community College alumnus and Delta State University graduate, Tre Hobbs has been selected to lead the Lady Trojan softball team. Before taking the head coaching job, Hobbs spent the 2022-2023 season as the assistant softball coach at Coahoma Community College where he served as the pitching and outfield coach. Prior to Coahoma, he spent time as the boys' baseball pitching coach at Clarksdale High School (2020-2021) and Washington School (2018-2019).

MDCC Athletic Director Jason Conner followed the advice of two coaches to bring in the former Trojan and Statesman pitcher.

“Two people I respect very much in the job that they do and the knowledge they have about coaching, (current Delta State University Athletic Director and former World Series Winning Head Baseball Coach) Mike Kinnison and (Former DSU, Central Arkansas and current MGCCC Head Softball Coach) David Kuhn were both very high on Coach Hobbs and what he brings to the table,” AD Conner said.

He's also been on the opposing sideline viewing Hobbs’ coaching acumen.

“And I had the pleasure of watching the young man coach in person (at Coahoma) and I’m excited that he’s going to be able to do that here. I think he’s going to be able to recruit talent to Mississippi Delta and he’s a Delta product – MDCC, DSU and Greenville,” AD Conner said. “I’m looking for very positive exciting things from our softball program.”

Hobbs former DSU coach, Mike Kinnison, knows the Trojans are getting a proven winner who can get the job done.

“I think it will be a great opportunity for Tre,” Coach Kinnison said. “He was well respected at Delta State as he excelled in our baseball program. He always had a great work ethic and approached the game seriously and I’m sure he will transmit that to that program.”

The former pitcher has continued his on the field career pitching for the Hattiesburg Black Sox and he also helps coach the team. The Trojan alum is happy to come home and right the Lady Trojan softball ship.

“It feels great to come home. Not many people get that opportunity. It’s the same mentality and it’s a faster game and softball will be a good challenge for me and I like a good challenge,” Coach Hobbs said. “I can bring a winning culture and establish that from the jump and let the ladies know this is how things are going to be and this is what it takes to accomplish that. I want to get the program up and running. As long as we’re progressing up every year, then we’re working for something.”

Using the philosophies instilled in him during his career, Coach Hobbs looks to instill proper fundamentals and build a winner.

“We are going to do the little things right that leads to bigger things in the end. It should be fun,” he said.

The former Trojan had a stellar playing career as a pitcher at Mississippi Delta Community College and at Delta State University. He played professionally for the Southern Illinois Miners (2017-2018) and the Napa Silverados (2019) after completing his eligibility for the Statesmen.
