New look Lady Trojans open on Nov. 4

2019-2020 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

The 2019-2020 version of the Mississippi Delta Community College women's basketball team gets underway on Monday, Nov. 4, on the road as the Lady Trojans take on Blue Mountain College JV in Blue Mountain, Miss. at 5 p.m.

The women's team will head into the campaign with a new leader in charge, as head coach Tangela Banks will roam the sideline in her first year as the leader of a women's collegiate program. Banks comes to Moorhead from Murrah High School, where in combination from her time at Forest Hill High School, claimed three Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state championships and had a highly-successful coaching career in the prep ranks.

She takes over the reins from Burnadette McDonald, who led the Lady Trojans for 20 seasons and achieved a remarkable amount of success, both on and off the court. The Lady Trojans are coming off a 2018-2019 season that saw MDCC make an apperance in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament in McDonald's swan song.

Banks is joined on her staff by assistant coaches Anissa Jackson and Marcus Ingram. Jackson is in her first season at MDCC after time as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Central Arkansas and a decorated playing career at nearby Delta State University, while Ingram was recently the head girls basketball coach at Wooddale High School in Memphis, Tenn.

A number of key returners highlight the 2019-2020 campaign, led by Artavia Tate (Belzoni), who is the leading returnee in minutes per game (14.8), points per game (6.4) and rebounds per game (4.1). Ladedra Bryant (Jackson) also had a successful rookie campaign, averaging 10.2 minutes per game, 3.9 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game.

MDCC will welcome Copiah-Lincoln Community College to Moorhead on Monday, Nov. 11, for a 6 p.m. start in the first home game of the season.

The Lady Trojans will host East Mississippi Community College on Monday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. to open North division play.
