
Wolves Dominate Trojans for Sweep
MOORHEAD – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road for a doubleheader against Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, February 18. The Wolves swept the Trojans in dominating fashion taking game one, 11-2, and then getting a shutout in game two, 16-0.
GAME ONE
The Wolves got on the board first as they scored two runs in the top of the first as Tucker Jones (Brandon) drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Jones then advanced to second as Donovan Moore (Bude) drew a walk. Jones then stole third and scored on an error on the play while Moore took second on the error. After Moore stole third, he scored as Trey Davidson (Brandon) reached on an error making the score, 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning, the Wolves added three runs to their lead in the third as Jones hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI single by Moore making the score, 3-0. Moore then scored on an RBI double by Davidson who then later scored on an RBI single by Evan Holifield (Stringer) to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Wolves then added a solo run in the top of the fourth as Reise Thomas (Florence) stepped up with one out and crushed a 1-1 pitch for a solo home run, his third in three games, to make the score, 6-0. The Wolves added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as Sam Cook (Shubuta) hit a two-out single to get the offense started. Cook then advanced to second on a wild pitch while Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Both runners then advanced on a passed ball while another passed ball allowed Cook to score and Griffin to advance to third making the score, 7-0, as Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) drew a walk. Thomas was then intentionally walked to load the bases while Jones drew a walk scoring Avery Griffin and increasing the lead to 8-0.
The Wolves added their final three runs in the top of the sixth as Davidson and Dylan Wesson (Brandon) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Later in the inning, Cook drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Avery Griffin then delivered a two-RBI single scoring Davidson and Wesson while Holifield then scored on an RBI single by Bledsoe increasing the lead to 11-0.
The Trojans then scored one run in the sixth to cut the lead down to 11-1 and then added one run in the seventh on an RBI single with two outs, but a groundout then ended the inning to secure the 11-2 victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled ten hits as Sam Cook had the only multi-hit game with two while Reise Thomas, Tucker Jones, Donovan Moore. Trey Davidson, Evan Holifield, Avery Griffin, Gavin Bledsoe, and Owen Spooner (Stone) had one hit each.
Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and improved to 4-0 with the win while pitching five scoreless innings allowing four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Darrin Robbins (Sumrall) and Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) pitched one inning of relief apiece with both allowing one unearned run in their inning while Robbins allowed two hits and Patterson allowed one hit and had two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader started the same way as the first with the Wolves scoring two runs in the top of the first as Reise Thomas and Tucker Jones hit back-to-back singles to start the game. After the Wolves pulled off a double steal, Thomas scored on an RBI groundout by Donovan Moore while Jones later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Brooks (Brandon) making the score, 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning the Wolves added a pair of runs in the top of the third as Jones hit a leadoff triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Moore increasing the lead to 3-0. Trey Davidson then hit a double and later scored in the inning as Sam Cook reached on an error making the score, 4-0.
The Wolves were held scoreless in the fourth and then exploded for a five-run top of the fifth as Davidson drew a walk and Brooks was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. Cook then singled to load the bases for the Wolves while Davidson then scored on an RBI single by Avery Griffin pushing the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) delivered a two-out, two-RBI single scoring Brooks and Cook. Hanlon then stole second while Avery Griffin scored on the play and an RBI single by Thomas scored Hanlon to run the lead to 9-0.
The Wolves added a single run in the top of the sixth as Brooks hit a two-out single and then scored on an RBI double by Cook making the score, 10-0. The final six runs for the Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Evan Holifield hit a leadoff single while Hanlon was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. Later in the inning, Holifield scored on an RBI single by Jones. Jones then stole second and took third on a passed ball that allowed Hanlon to score while an RBI single by Moore scored Jones to run the lead to 13-0. Davidson then followed with a single while Brooks reached on a fielder's choice where Moore was forced out on the play. Cook then provided the final three runs of the game as he crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run making the score, 16-0. The Wolves punctuated the victory with three strikeouts of Trojans batters in the seventh.
The Wolves totaled 15 hits as Tucker Jones and Sam Cook had three hits each while Reise Thomas and Trey Davidson had two hits apiece with Donovan Moore, Caleb Brooks, Avery Griffin, Evan Holifield, and Bradley Hanlon had one hit each. Cook led the team in RBIs with four, Moore had three, and Hanlon had two while Thomas, Jones, Brooks, and Avery Griffin had one RBI each.
Parker Ishee (Ridgeland) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 2-1 overall while pitching five scoreless innings allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Tanner Blackwell (Flora) and Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief while Judson Griffin struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to add three strikeouts to his outing.
Co-Lin is now 11-4 overall and will return to action with two games on Friday, February 21. The Wolves will play the Rend Lake Warriors at Noon and then will face off against the Southeastern Blackhawks at 6 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
