Lady Wolves No-Hit Lady Trojans in Sweep

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed MACCC play hosting Mississippi Delta on Friday, March 29. The No. 2 Lady Wolves swept the Lady Trojans while also throwing no-hitters taking game one, 9-0, and game two, 10-0.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader was scoreless through the first two and a half innings of play, but the Lady Wolves broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.

Bailee Goodson (Brookhaven) got the offense going with a leadoff double while Madison Moak (Brookhaven) followed with a single to put two runners on with no outs. Goodson then scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Leia Phillips (Philadelphia). Abby Grace Richardson then stepped and crushed a 1-1 pitch for a two-run home run, her 12th of the season, tying the career home run record at Co-Lin while giving the Lady Wolves a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Carson Hughey (Brookhaven) hit a leadoff single to start the inning. Later in the inning, Hughey stole second and then scored on a one-out, RBI triple by Moak. Moak then scored on a sacrifice fly by Phillips increasing the lead to 5-0.

The Lady Wolves scored the final four runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Sarah Grace Smith (Crystal Springs) and Kinley Ainsworth (Brandon) got the inning started with back-to-back singles. After Ainsworth stole second, a third-straight single by Emeri Warren (Sebastopol) scored Smith and Ainsworth giving the Lady Wolves a 7-0 lead. After Warren stole second, Hughey reached on an error while Goodson hit a bunt single to load the bases with no outs for the Lady Wolves. Madison Moak then ended the game with a two-RBI walk off double scoring Warren and Hughey and giving the Lady Wolves the 9-0 win.

The Lady Wolves totaled 13 hits as a team with Madison Moak and Kinley Ainsworth leading the way with three hits apiece while Bailee Goodson had two hits with AG Richardson, Zykeria Cole (Magee), Sarah Grace Smith, Emeri Warren, and Carson Hughey added one hit each. Moak led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three while Phillips, Richardson, and Warren had two RBIs each.

Cara Biswell (Brandon) pitched a complete game no-hitter in the win and improved to 10-2 overall. Biswell allowed just one baserunner, a leadoff walk in the top of the second, and had eight strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The scoring in the second game started one inning earlier than the first as the Lady Wolves plated three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

Kinley Ainsworth hit a leadoff single while Taylor Efferson (Holden, LA) drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs for the Lady Wolves. Ainsworth then scored on an RBI single by Sarah Grace Smith to give the Lady Wolves the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Efferson and Smith scored on a two-RBI single by Carson Hughey increasing the Lady Wolves lead to 3-0.

The Lady Wolves then scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding lead against the Lady Trojans as Abby Grace Richardson got the offense started with a one-out double. Ainsworth then hit a single while both Richardson and Ainsworth scored as Efferson reached on an error increasing the lead to 5-0. Smith was then hit-by-pitch while Kynlee Madere (Paulina, LA) drew a walk to load the bases after Kat Case (Monticello) was brought in as a pinch runner for Efferson.

Case then scored as Laney Waguespack (Bayou Gauche, LA) reached on a fielder's choice while Madere was forced out on the play. Olivia Banes (Pelahatchie) then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Madison Moak then stepped up and crushed a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for a grand slam, her eighth home run of the season, giving the Lady Wolves a 10-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves then retired the Lady Trojans in order in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the game two win and sweep of the day.

The Lady Wolves totaled seven hits as a team with Kinley Ainsworth leading the way going 2-for-2 at the plate while Madison Moak, AG Richardson, Sarah Grace Smith, Emma Kate Fimiano (Petal), and Carson Hughey had one hit each. Moak led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with four while Efferson and Hughey had two RBIs apiece with Smith and Laney Waguespack adding one RBI each.

The Lady Wolves got a combined no-hitter from their pitching staff in game two as Keegan McCorkle (Tyronza, AR) got the start and improved to 6-0 overall. McCorkle pitched four innings, allowing just three baserunners on a walk, hit-by-pitch, and an error, with six strikeouts. Emily Richarde (Lakeland, TN) pitched one inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 24-2 overall, 11-0 in conference play, and will return to action on the road in a top-four matchup against Pearl River on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch between the No. 2 Lady Wolves and No. 4 Lady Wildcats is set for 4 p.m., at Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.
