Wolves Drop Doubleheader Against Trojans

MOORHEAD - The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to conference play on the road against Mississippi Delta on Friday, March 29. The Trojans swept the Wolves in a pair of one-run games taking game one, 5-4, and game two, 2-1.

GAME ONE

The Trojans broke through first as they plated three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead against the Wolves. The Trojans then scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth to increase their lead to 5-0.

The Wolves looked to scratch across a run in the sixth as Tucker Jones (Brandon) drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) singled while Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning with no scoring done.

The Wolves scored their first run of the game in the eighth inning as Jones once again got the offense going with a one-out single. Jones then later scored on a two-out RBI double by McKenzie cutting the lead down to 5-1.

The Wolves then began a big comeback effort in the top of the ninth as Sawyer Dunn (Magee) and Jon David Weed (Terry) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Dunn then scored on a third-straight single by Spencer Wilson (McComb) cutting the lead down to 5-2 while Braden Freeman (Terry) was then brought in as a pinch runner for Wilson. Later in the inning, Brayden Bankston (Terry) was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out.

Weed then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones while Hagan Coumbe (Utica) then singled and an error on the play allowed Freeman to score and cut the lead down to one run at 5-4. McKenzie then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs putting the tying run on third base, but a groundout ended the game securing the win for the Trojans.

The Wolves totaled nine hits as a team with Jordan McKenzie and JD Weed having two hits apiece while Brayden Bankston, Tucker Jones, Hagan Coumbe, Sawyer Dunn, and Spencer Wilson had one hit each. Jones, McKenzie, and Wilson had one RBI each for the Wolves.

Tyler Ferguson (Bossier City, LA) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 0-1 overall while pitching one inning and allowing three runs, all earned, with two walks and three hit-by-pitch. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched 5.2 innings of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with one strikeout while Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched 0.1 innings of relief with three walks and one strikeout. Sam Thomas (Madison) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief.

GAME TWO

The second game got off to a different start as the Wolves scored first with a run in the top of the first as Brayden Bankston and Tucker Jones drew back-to-back walks to start the inning.

Later in the inning, Jordan McKenzie drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Bankston then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brentley Berry, but an out on the bases during the play ended the inning with the Wolves leading 1-0.

However, the Trojans responded by tying the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning and then took the lead with one run in the bottom of the second making the score, 2-1.

The Wolves then looked to scratch across the tying run in the fifth as Braydon Evans (Florence) and Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland) hit back-to-back singles with two outs, but a lineout brought the inning to an end with no scoring done. Jones then hit a leadoff single in the sixth, but the Trojans recorded three straight outs by the Wolves leaving Jones stranded at second after a stolen base in the inning.

The Trojans then retired the Wolves in order in the top of the seventh to secure the game two win, 2-1, and sweep on the day.

Tucker Jones, Braydon Evans, and Isaac McClenty accounted for the three hits in the game for the Wolves while Brentley Berry had one RBI.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and moved to 5-4 overall while pitching five innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief.

Co-Lin is now 17-19 overall, 5-7 in conference play, and will return to action hosting No. 5 Pearl River on Tuesday, April 2. First pitch between the Wildcats and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
