Trojans baseball sweeps two-game series in Millington

The baseball program at Mississippi Delta Community College grabbed two victories in a split doubleheader in Millington, Tenn., over the weekend to move to 8-4 on the season.

The Trojans defeated Iowa Central Community College, 14-5, in game one on Saturday at Tipton-Rosemark Academy before getting a 6-5 victory over Bevill State (Ala.) Community College in a thrilling game two victory at USA Stadium in Millington.

In game one on Saturday, MDCC broke out the sticks in a big way by hammering out 13 hits. Cade Blanchard (Prairieville, La.), Blayke Dendy (Yazoo City), Carson Forrester and Parker Lane (both of Columbus) and Jeremy Smith (Wesson) each had two hits in the contest, led by Dendy's home run, double and three RBI.

Kellen Spann (Clarkdale) was outstanding in relief versus Iowa Central, as the sophomore right-hander tossed four scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the season.

In the second contest versus Bevill State, it was Blanchard and Lane that led the offense, as the sophomore duo each finished with two hits. Drew Pounders (Columbus) delivered the big blow, as the freshman infielder had a two-RBI double in the middle part of the game to get the MDCC scoring started.

Conner Wyly (West Monroe, La.), much like Spann in the first game, was stellar in relief, as the freshman righty threw 2.1 innings, only giving up one hit and one walk, while finishing with two strikeouts. He earned the win to move to 2-1 on the season.

MDCC was set to travel to Senatobia on Friday, but will now head up on Thursday in an attempt to beat the incoming weather. The Trojans will play Coahoma Community College at 11 a.m. and then Northwest Community College at 2 p.m., with both games being held at Jim Miles Field on the campus of Northwest CC in Senatobia.
