Men’s basketball drops first two to start 2021

MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College men's basketball program played host to Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday night in Moorhead, looking to even their 2021 record at a win apiece. It was not to be, however, as the Tigers of Northeast left town with an 89-62 victory over MDCC.

The Trojans fell to 0-2 on the young season, with their first loss of the season coming on Thursday, Jan. 21 at Itawamba Community College. The Indians of ICC hit a layup with one second to go to come away with a 64-62 win over Delta.

In Monday's game vs. Northeast, Willie Eagins, Jr. (Jonestown) led all MDCC scorers with 18 points, to go along with five rebounds. He was aided in the double digit scoring column by Morgan Green (Greenville), who had 13 points against the Tigers. The freshman guard also had four assists and four steals.

In the season opener against ICC, MDCC was led by Chavis Banks (Yazoo City), who had a monster game in the lidlifter, finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the team. He was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe, and also added two assists to beef up his final stat line.

Local talents Shamarvious Hodges (Indianola) and Green assisted Banks in what turned out to be a heartbreaking loss, as Hodges poured in 13 points and Green added 12 points of his own. Green also led all players with seven assists in his collegiate debut.

MDCC returns to action again on Thursday night, traveling to Coahoma Community College in hopes of picking up their first win of the campaign. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at The Pinnacle in Clarksdale.
