Trojans fighting through rough conditions

MOORHEAD – The start of the 2021 season for the Mississippi Delta Community College softball program has been one of battling Mother Nature in the early going.

Despite a number of cancellations, Delta has been able to get in four games to this point against Southwest Mississippi Community College and Louisiana College.

MDCC hosted Southwest on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Bears in Moorhead. Southwest came away with an 9-1 victory in game one and a 5-1 win in game two. On Friday, Feb. 5, the Trojans traveled to Pineville, La., to take on LC, who grabbed a 15-7 win in game one and an 18-6 win in game two. The losses have the Trojans now at 0-4 in the infant stages of the 2021 campaign.

GAME 1 vs. SOUTHWEST

In Tuesday's opener versus Southwest, the Trojans were led by Macey Hill (Dumas), who drove in the lone run on her first collegiate home run. Morgan Bigbee (Lexington) and Mary Scott Lofton (Doddsville) each added a hit to aid in the three-hit attack.

Gracie Parsons (Southaven) was the hard-luck losing pitcher in the circle, despite throwing 5.1 innings and allowing only four earned runs to cross. She added two strikeouts to just one walk on the day.

GAME 2 vs. SOUTHWEST

Lofton and Lexie James (Olive Branch) each picked up two hits in the nightcap, as Lofton added a double as well. Hill was able to pick up a double in addition to scoring the game's lone run for MDCC.

Alexandrea Johnson (Raleigh), like Parsons before her, had a very solid effort in the circle in game two. The second-year freshman tossed 4.1 innings, allowing only three runs and one walk, but was credited with the loss in the final decision.

GAME 1 vs. LOUISIANA COLLEGE

In the season opener at LC on Feb. 5, it was Madisen Rainey (Water Valley) that led the way for MDCC, as she collected two hits and scored two runs in the 15-7 loss. Bigbee and Layne Tedder (Pontotoc) both had two RBI and a hit to assist offensively. Parsons threw in the game's middle innings and drew the loss in the circle.

GAME 2 vs. LOUISIANA COLLEGE

In the second game of the season, the Trojans were led by Bigbee and Anna Carlisle (Polkville), who were the multiple hitters in the Opening Day nightcap. Bigbee and Tedder both had two RBI each in the 18-6 defeat.

Cassidy Simmons (Aberdeen) started the game in the circle and was charged with the loss in her collegiate debut.

COMING UP

MDCC was scheduled to host the M-Trade Round Robin in Oxford over the weekend, but all games were canceled due to wintry weather.

The Trojans were also set to host Southwest again on Monday and then travel to face Blue Mountain College on Tuesday, but both doubleheaders have been canceled in preparation of the winter storm approaching the Southeast.
