Softball opens conference play on Saturday

MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College softball program will begin a trek toward postseason play on Saturday when the Trojans travel to Meridian Community College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader that gets Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) play underway.

Delta had been snowed out of a week's worth of competition in the previous week, but were able to get four games in this week to further prepare themselves for league play.

MDCC traveled to Baton Rouge, La., on Monday, Feb. 22 to take on Baton Rouge Community College and came away with an 11-6 loss in game one and a tough 6-5 loss in game two.

Delta would then travel to Southwest Mississippi Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for a tri-match with Crowder (Mo.) College and Southwest. Game one was an 8-2 victory for Crowder and then Southwest was able to come up with a 10-2 win over MDCC in game two.

GAME 1 vs. CROWDER

In Wednesday's first game in Summit versus Crowder, it was McKinley Newcomer (Columbia) who provided the offensive sock, as the freshman had two hits, including a home run and an RBI.

Gracie Parsons (Southaven) took the loss in the circle for the Trojans.

GAME 2 vs. SOUTHWEST

In the nightcap, Delta was led on the offensive end by Mary Scott Lofton (Doddsville), who was the lone MDCC hitter with two hits. Newcomer and Layne Tedder (Pontotoc) each added an RBI versus the Bears.

Cearra McPherson (Springdale, Ark.) was the losing pitcher of record for the Trojans against Southwest in the Wednesday finale.

GAME 1 vs. BATON ROUGE

Mississippi Delta started the week off with a trip to the Red Stick, and put forth a very impressive offensive attack that included six solo home runs in the doubleheader. The Trojans received solo shots from Morgan Bigbee (Lexington), Anna Carlisle (Polkville), Macey Hill (Dumas) and McPherson in the opener.

Bigbee picked up two RBI as well to lead the charge. Parsons took the defeat in the circle in game one.

GAME 2 vs. BATON ROUGE

Hill had quite a nightcap on Monday, as the freshman slugger had three hits, including two doubles, one home run and two RBI. She was aided by Lofton and Newcomer, who each two hits, with Newcomer adding a solo home run as well.

McPherson was charged with the loss in game two.

COMING UP

Delta (0-8) will get underway versus Meridian at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Queen City before returning home for an eight-game homestand.
