Wanda Evans Dixon – Basketball/Softball – 1989 -1991
Coming from a small Louisiana town, Dixon fit the Moorhead campus like a glove. She made her mark on both the basketball court and the softball diamond. The left-handed wing player was deadly behind the three-point arc, making seven in one game. Coach Buddy Walden noted her impact coming off the bench, providing instant offense and giving the team an injection of energy. Her play improved more once she adjusted to contact lenses.
Honored as the Lady Trojan MVP, she also hauled in the Most Free Throws Award as well. Though not a softball player, her basketball teammates were on the diamond.
"Despite never playing before, I pitched our team to a State Championship, showing my dedication and determination," Dixon said.
Her signature celebration on the mound, a cartwheel after each strikeout added a "little flair to the game." She also had an "incredible line drive catch on the mound" that immediately brought Head Coach Buddy Walden out of the dugout with a bit of pride but admonished and reminded her to "be more careful."
With her BA and two Masters, Dixon has worked as a Special Education and elementary school teacher.
