MOORHEAD – As Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) play was set to get underway on Saturday, the Mississippi Delta Community College baseball program was scheduled to play host to Meridian Community College in Moorhead.
Mother Nature had different plans, however, as very heavy rains passed through the Delta on Thursday night and into Friday. The Trojans will now switch sites and travel to Meridian on Saturday at 3 p.m., with MDCC continuing to serve as the home team despite the location switch.
Delta was able to get on the field on Tuesday, Feb. 23 for their first game competition on since Feb.3 due to COVID-19 protocols and then a week's worth of wintry weather.
The Trojans traveled to Scooba on Tuesday and after a 12-2 loss in game one, Delta put forth a valiant effort in game two before falling 5-4 in extra innings.
GAME 1 vs EAST MISSISSIPPI
Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) had two hits in the opener versus the Lions, as the freshman infielder picked up two hits. Chad Stockstill (Picayune) hit his first collegiate home run and drove in both of the team's runs in game one.
Tanner Johnson (Richton) drew the start on the hill in the first game and was charged with the loss.
GAME 2 vs EAST MISSISSIPPI
The second game turned into a pitcher's duel and the Trojans received marvelous outings from Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) and Haden Luke (Vicksburg), as the duo combined for 14 strikeouts in the nine-inning affair.
Comer threw six innings and allowed only two earned runs, while striking out eight hitters and allowing only one walk. Luke was credited with the tough-luck loss, despite throwing 2.2 innings and finishing with six strikeouts.
Carson Chapman (Flowood) was an offensive force in the nightcap, as the second-year outfielder drove in all four Trojan runs on the strength of a home run and double.
Gage Little (Duck Hill) had three hits in the second game to aid Chapman's effort.
