MOORHEAD – Tuesday afternoon was an excellent day on the diamond for the Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team, as the Trojans left Goodman with a doubleheader sweep of Holmes Community College.
Delta won game one, 15-8, before hanging on for a hard-fought 12-11 victory in game two.
The Trojans have now won three of their last four games after Tuesday's sweep of Holmes and their March 27 split with Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
MDCC vs. HOLMES, 3/30/21
The Trojans broke out the bats in a big way in game one on Tuesday, picking up 19 hits in the opener. Julian Murphy (Ridgeland) led the way with a 4-4 effort, complete with three RBI, a run scored and a double. Gage Little (Duck Hill) and Eli Stallings (Boyle) each added three hits, with Little pounding two home runs and picking up two RBI and Stallings scoring three runs.
Chad Dudenhefer (Picayune), Riggs Easterling (Shreveport, La.) and Tanner Johnson (Richton) had two hits apiece, with Easterling hitting his second home run in as many games in the opener.
Casey Burge (Lumberton) threw the first four innings and picked up five strikeouts to earn the win on the mound in game one. Chase Morgan (Kosciusko) threw the last three frames, allowing only one unearned run and finishing with four strikeouts to pick up the save.
In the second game, it was the bat of Carson Chapman (Flowood) that led the way, as the second-year outfielder had four hits and scored four runs. He also had three doubles and three RBI in the narrow win.
Murphy and Stallings had two hits apiece in the nightcap, with Murphy driving in two runs and Stallings driving in two of his own after his second home run in as many playing dates.
Blayne Clark (Water Valley) was excellent once again in relief, earning the win after going five innings and allowing only one earned run. The freshman righty had three strikeouts and didn't walk a single Holmes batter.
Haden Luke (Vicksburg) was credited with the save after throwing the seventh inning and striking out the side to end the ballgame.
MDCC vs. CO-LIN, 3/27/21
MDCC traveled to Wesson to face Co-Lin on Saturday and after a convincing 13-7 victory in game one, the Trojans dropped a tough one, 12-8, in game two.
Little led the way in the opener with four of the team's 16 hits, and added four RBI along the way. Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) had three hits and two runs scored, and Easterling, Murphy and Stallings all had two hits apiece. Murphy added a triple and Stallings hit a home run to add to their efforts.
Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) earned the win on the mound in game one after going five innings and then it was Clark who captured the multi-inning save. Clark threw the final four innings and allowed only an earned run, while striking out five Wolves hitters.
Chapman, Johnson and Murphy all had two hits in the second game, and Easterling added a home run, but it wasn't quite enough to come away with the two-game sweep of Co-Lin.
