MOORHEAD – The second half of the 2021 season has gone the way the Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team has wished, especially of late, as the Trojans have won three of the last four contests.
The lone blemish for Delta was a 2-1 loss to East Mississippi Community College on Tuesday, but the Trojans had won the previous three games to that point.
MDCC defeated East Mississippi in game one, 7-4, on Tuesday and swept Southwest Mississippi Community College on Sunday, winning 16-7 in game one and 7-6 in game two.
MDCC vs. EAST MISSISSIPPI, 4/13
The Trojans hosted the Lions of EMCC on Tuesday and pulled out a 7-4 win in game one after an impressive complete game performance from Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.). The freshman right-hander threw all nine innings in the contest and finished with 11 strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed.
Eli Stallings (Boyle) led the way for the Trojans offense in game one, as the second-year catcher picked up three hits, including a double. Gage Little (Duck Hill) and Julian Murphy (Ridgeland) each finished with two hits in the victory for the Trojans, with Little scoring a run and Murphy scoring two runs.
Haden Luke (Vicksburg) tried to match his freshman counterpart on the mound in the second game by throwing a complete game gem in which he had nine strikeouts and allowed only one earned run, but didn't receive enough run support in taking the 2-1 loss.
Murphy, who has seen his batting average raise to over .400 at .404, continued his hot hitting with two hits and the lone run scored for MDCC in the second game. Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) picked up a hit and the only RBI for Delta.
MDCC vs. SOUTHWEST, 4/11
The Trojans won the opener against SW on Sunday in convincing fashion, picking up a 16-7 run-rule victory behind an offense that was on fire. Carson Chapman (Flowood) was 3-4 with three runs scored and Tanner Johnson (Richton) was 3-4 with three RBI to pace the hot hitters.
Blayne Clark (Water Valley) was 2-4 with three RBI, Little was 2-2 with three runs scored, Murphy was 2-4 and Stallings was 2-4 with five RBI (including a home run) to add to the double-digit hit total.
Patrick Martin (Brandon) was the winner on the mound in game one, and MDCC received quality outings from Chase Logan (Holcomb) and Spencer Roberson (Leland).
In the second game, the Trojans mounted a late inning comeback to send the game into extra innings and then walked the Bears off on an RBI single in the eighth inning from Davon Mims (Vicksburg), who finished the game with two hits.
Murphy had three hits, Chapman was 2-4 with three RBI and Riggs Easterling (Shreveport, La.) was 2-3 to pace the offensive attack.
Casey Burge (Lumberton) was credited with the no decision on the hill despite throwing four innings and allowing only one run to cross. Chase Morgan (Kosciusko) got the win after throwing the final four innings in the comeback victory.
