Trojans drop Homecoming game to Rangers
MOORHEAD – The annual Homecoming game took place for the Mississippi Delta Community College football team on Saturday, with the Trojans looking to pull off a win against No. 9 Northwest Community College. It was not meant to be, however, as the Rangers of Northwest came away with a 26-9 victory in Moorhead.
The loss put the Trojans at 0-2 on the season, with Northwest moving to 3-0.
Jamie Shaw got the scoring started for Northwest early in the second quarter when he ran it in from one yard out, and after the point after attempt was good, the Rangers led 7-0.
Corblin McGinn (D'Iberville) put the Trojans on the board with his 30-yard field goal with 5:24 left before halftime, The 7-3 score was the same one that both teams took into the locker room.
The Delta defense was tremendous in the first half, as Northwest only had 64 total yards combined on 23 plays, while MDCC had 99 total yards on 36 plays.
With 11:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Rangers pushed their lead to 9-3 after a bad Delta snap resulted in a safety for Northwest. The Rangers would move ahead 16-3 when quarterback Michael Hiers connected with D.T. Sheffield on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.
MDCC would cut into the NW lead late in the third quarter with a 10-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by a five-yard touchdown run from Patrick Lindsey (Flowood). The McGinn PAT was no good and the contest was now 16-9 in favor of the Rangers.
This would be the end of the Trojans scoring, unfortunately, as the Rangers reeled off 10 consecutive points to end the contest. This was started by a 23-yard field goal from Tucker Barefoot with 12:25 left in the fourth quarter.
The final scoring of the afternoon came when Hiers found Jacoby Jones on a 22-yard touchdown strike to extend the Northwest lead to 26-9 with seven minutes to go in the game.
Delta finished the evening with 185 total yards on 60 plays, with 128 coming through the air and 57 coming on the ground. Northwest had 57 plays for 258 yards, with 124 passing and 134 rushing yards.
Su'Metris Stewart (Hollandale) was one of the highlights of the MDCC defense, as the sophomore defensive back hauled in his second interception in as many games on Saturday.
The Trojans will now have a quick turnaround, returning to action on Thursday night (Nov. 12) at Coahoma Community College. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Clarksdale.
