MOORHEAD – After falling to Northwest Community College in their annual Homecoming game on Saturday, the Mississippi Delta Community College football team will not have a long period of time ahead to lick their wounds. The Trojans now have a quick turnaround in front of them, traveling to Clarksdale on Thursday night to take on heated rival Coahoma Community College.
The Delta rivalry will get underway on Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at James E. Miller Stadium on the Coahoma campus just on the outskirts of Clarksdale.
MDCC grabbed a thrilling come-from-behind, 29-27, victory at Coahoma in 2019 and will look to pick up their first win of the season against the Tigers. The Trojans currently sit at 0-2 after a 26-9 loss on Saturday at the hands of No. 9 Northwest. The Tigers of Coahoma are 2-2 after a 26-14 victory over Holmes Community College on Nov. 5.
On Saturday against Northwest, it was Freddie Byrd (Woodville) that provided a much-needed spark. The freshman signal caller finished the contest 6-8 with 50 yards passing, as the Trojans were looking for the comeback victory.
A main target of Byrd and of starting quarterback Jordan Gilleylen (Tupelo) has been LaDarius Moore (Brandon), who hauled in seven receptions for 46 yards versus the Rangers. The freshman wideout leads Delta through two games, as he will enter the Coahoma game with 14 receptions and 132 yards.
Su'Metris Stewart (Hollandale) has been a playmaker deluxe on the defensive side for the Trojans through two games, including picking up nine tackles and an interception versus Northwest. The sophomore defensive back now had two interceptions in as many contests, including a pick-six against Northeast in the season opener.
Ken'Terious Owens (Oxford) was a force on the defensive line on Saturday, racking up five tackles, including two for loss, against Northwest. The sophomore lineman was unable to play in week one, but came out with a vengeance in the annual Homecoming game.
The Coahoma offense will be led on Thursday by the quarterback/wide receiver tandem of Bryce Wallace and Von Hill.
Wallace heads into Thursday's game with 58 completions on 102 passes for 673 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Hill has been his main target, as he has hauled in 17 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns through four games.
Freshman linebacker Donte Starks heads up the CCC defense, as he currently has 28 tackles, including three for loss and two sacks. He has also forced two fumbles.
