Delta suffers hard fought loss at CCC

CLARKSDALE – The Mississippi Delta Community College football team took to the road for the first time on Thursday night looking to come away with their first victory of 2020 against long-time rival Coahoma Community College, but came up just short after falling, 17-13.

MDCC dropped to 0-3 on the campaign, while Coahoma improved their record to 3-2.

The Tigers of Coahoma jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but MDCC soon responded when Kelvin Smith (Columbus) picked up his first collegiate touchdown on a powerful 34-yard rush. Corblin McGinn (D'Iberville) added the PAT to put the Trojans ahead, 7-3, midway through the first quarter.

Coahoma would take a 10-7 advantage with 3:38 left in the second quarter, and the score would remain this way heading into the locker room.

Delta jumped back ahead with 7:33 left in the third quarter when freshman quarterback Freddie Byrd (Woodville) connected with LaDarius Moore (Brandon) in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown strike. The point after attempt was blocked, but MDCC still lead, 13-10.

The Tigers would add a touchdown late in the contest to take a 17-13 lead, and this is where the scoring would remain for the rest of the game, as both teams had trouble generating offense all evening.

Byrd finished the contest 16-25 through the air for 165 yards and a touchdown pass in his first collegiate start. Smith led the ground attack with 10 rushes for 79 yards and a score.

Marlon Brown (Pickens) led the Trojans defense with 15 tackles, one tackle for a loss and 0.5 sacks. Jeremiah Johnson (Anguilla) had four tackles and his first collegiate interception to assist the MDCC defense.

MDCC returns to action on Thursday, as the Trojans will take on Northwest Community College at 7 p.m. in Senatobia.
