Trojans drop heartbreaker at Holmes

MOORHEAD – The Trojans of Mississippi Delta Community College softball suffered a heartbreaking loss at Holmes Community College in Goodman on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs hit a two-out, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to defeat MDCC, 9-8.

The Trojans and Bulldogs had a hard-fought opening game as well, one that was captured by Holmes, 6-2.

MDCC also played host to Hinds Community College on Friday, March 12 and dropped the doubleheader, losing 5-2 in game one and 15-2 in the second game.

Lexie James (Olive Branch) provided the offensive sock for the Trojans in the opener on Tuesday, as the second-year outfielder was a perfect 3-3 with a double and run scored. McKinley Newcomer (Columbia) aided in the effort with a two-run home run early in the contest.

Gracie Parsons (Southaven) took the loss in the circle in game one in the complete game effort.

James was the heavy hitter in game two as well, as she finished the contest with two home runs, two runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base. Emma Colwart (Mandeville, La.) and Madisen Rainey (Water Valley) each hit home runs as well, and the duo each finished with two hits in the contest.

Morgan Bigbee (Lexington) had three hits in the nightcap and scored two runs. Parsons was charged with the loss in the circle.

MDCC vs. HINDS, 3/12/21

Rainey led off the first game versus Hinds with a solo home run and Colwart added the second run in the next inning to complete the scoring for MDCC. Layne Tedder (Pontotoc) had two hits and a stolen base in the opener.

Parsons took the loss on the mound in game one, despite a complete game performance that saw her finish with six strikeouts.

In game two, Newcomer and Tedder scored runs and James picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Cearra McPherson (Springdale, Ark.) was the losing pitcher of record in the circle.

UP NEXT

MDCC (3-9 in MACCC play) heads to East Central Community College on Saturday for another conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Decatur.
